Eligibility

Each year, the NYC Teaching Fellows program looks for talented individuals who have excelled in their previous endeavors and are dedicated to raising student achievement in high-need communities. However, in order to comply with regulations set forth by the New York State Education Department and our partner universities, Teaching Fellows applicants must also meet certain eligibility requirements.

In order to be eligible for the program, applicants must

  • Have been awarded a Bachelor's degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0 (consideration given for demonstrated achievement). An applicant's Bachelor's degree must be conferred by September 15, 2007 (for the Midyear program's first training session), or December 15, 2007 (for the Midyear's second training session). For the June 2008 program, an applicant must have completed their Bachelor's degree by June 2008.
  • Have U.S. citizenship, or permanent residency with a valid green card, and fluency in English.
  • Not have previously benefited from a NYC Department of Education tuition assistance program (other than career training for paraprofessionals).
  • Not have previously received an Unsatisfactory rating from the NYC Department of Education.
  • Not have completed more than seventeen college credits in teacher education or a minor in education before beginning training with NYCTF.
  • Not be certified to teach.*
  • Not have worked as a regular, full-time teacher in a New York City public school at any time since September 2002.
  • Not have previously withdrawn from the Fellowship after beginning training.

*If you are currently certified, you should inquire at the New York City Department of Education Recruitment Office about other ways to become a teacher in the New York City public schools or visit http://www.teachnyc.net.

PLEASE NOTE:

The Fellowship is a highly selective program. Meeting eligibility requirements does NOT guarantee acceptance.

TESTING REQUIREMENTS

Under New York State Education Department guidelines, all Fellows must take and pass both the Liberal Arts and Sciences Test (LAST) and the appropriate Content Specialty Test (CST) before they can begin teaching. Each Fellow is responsible for the costs of the exams.

We encourage candidates to wait until they are accepted to register for these tests. For registration information, please visit the New York State Teacher Certification Examinations' webpage.
