"Even if I physically went
to school in another place, my heart has always been here in the Bronx. That is
one of my biggest connections with young people." -Malik, 2008

A “typical” New York City student
would be impossible to describe. The student population of New York City’s
public school system is vibrant and diverse, encompassing a variety of ages,
ethnicities, and experiences.
We believe that the teaching
force in New York City should be as diverse as the student population. Educators
with an array of personal experiences are able to relate to and connect with
their students in a meaningful way, and our goal is to bring more educators of
this type into the classroom. To this end, the NYC Teaching Fellows program
seeks candidates from a broad range of professional and cultural
backgrounds.
Our dedication to recruiting a
diverse teaching force has produced noticeable results. The participants of the
June 2009 Fellowship came to the program from a wide variety of industries,
including education, non-profit, financial, advertising, law, healthcare, media,
and government. Furthermore, 41 percent of Fellows who began training
in 2009 identified themselves as black or Latino. This represents a 4
percent increase from 2008.
Regardless of whether you have
worked in finance or advertising, or whether you grew up in a rural town or a
large city, you have a lifetime of experiences to share with students. If you
have the desire to use your knowledge and experiences to positively affect the
lives of New York City children, you may be an ideal candidate for the NYC
Teaching Fellows program. We encourage you to apply now.
